Congratulations Heather Dubreuil and Michele Meredith

Have you ever biked the Soulanges Canal? It's a 27 km stretch from Pointe-des- Cascades to St.-Zotique, just north of Valleyfield, Quebec. The bike path sees 100,000 visitors annually, who bike, walk, and rollerblade along its length. Each kilometre is marked with a tall post that displays back-to-back six foot tall banners, each featuring an image of an original work of art by a regional artist or artisan. The organizers call it Canada's largest outdoor art gallery.

Heather Dubreuil and Michele Meredith are delighted to have been included in the 54 artists whose work was chosen for this project. The banners will be on display for the next four years.

As well, the actual art works will be shown around the county all this summer, beginning with the official opening at Pavillon Wilson, 48 rue Principale, Coteau-de-Lac, May 3, 6 - 10 p.m. You are warmly invited to join Heather and Michele for the vernissage.

PAULA BENJAMINSON, friend and former SAQA Central Canada member to teach in London, ON at LONDON INTERNATIONAL QUILT FESTIVAL in JUNE 2013


Interested in incorporating mixed media elements in your quilts?  Wondering how to use fabric paint and Paintstiks in stitched work? Looking for an exotic design inspiration?
Paula Benjaminson (SAQA Oregon/Canada/Africa) will be teaching a two-day Fabric Stamping Safari workshop on June 12 and 13, 2013 with stamping and sewing, and a one-day workshop on June 14 with stamping only at “Out of Africa 2013” the London International Quilt Festival in London, Ontario. 
In the workshop, Paula teaches printing with hand-carved wooden blocks from Oshiwa Designs in Namibia, Paula’s former home in Africa, covering everything from choosing fabric paint, tackling different surface design techniques for preparing backgrounds, embossing velvet, and foiling with the blocks.

SAQA members Micaela Fitzsimmons, Maggie Vanderweit and Cynthia McNair included at Stratford Perth Museum Exhibition Opening April 20th

"The Birds & the Bees & the Flowers & the Trees"
An exhibit of quilts, fibre art & wood carvings inspired by nature.

Artists working in fabrics and wood portray the natural beauty of southwestern Ontario in quilts, fibre art and wood carvings that inspire and delight. Traditional quilts - pieced and appliqued - are vibrant with colour and pattern. Abstract quilts and fibre art evoke the subtle textures of fields and forests. Lifelike carvings of birds and animals are worked in exquisite detail. It's SPRING, and a feast for the eyes and the spirit!
More than 70 quilts and 30 carved birds, flowers and animals are on display.
The exhibit is curated by SAQA member Micaela Fitzsimmons and includes fibre art by SAQA members Maggie Vanderweit and Cynthia McNair.
The Museum is open Tuesday - Saturday, 10 am - 4 pm
Beginning May 1st, we are also open Sunday and Monday, 12-4 pm

Central Canada REGIONAL MEETING Scheduled FOR MAY 13, 2013 at St. Lawrence College, Brockville, ON

SAQA Central Regional Meeting

Food: Coffee, tea, juice and some snacks provided.  Please bring finger-food snacks to share and/or a brown-bag lunch - no facilities at the College, though Tims/Restaurants nearby
Please park in the front of the building and enter the college main front doors. Follow the corridor to the left in front of the Marianne Van Silfhout Gallery. The Room will be on your left as you round the corridor, down the hallway behind the Gallery. Watch for signage.
*** A $5 donation is requested to cover refreshment costs etc.

CENTRAL CANADA's SOUTHERN ONTARIO Group plans Regional Gathering

Dwayne Wanner, Ontario Co-rep for SAQA, extends an invitation to all members able to attend to be a part of the Regional Meeting,  SAQA Central Canada Southern Ontario
     Date: Sunday April 21st from 1:00PM to 3:00PM
     Location: Burlington Arts Centre (BAC) 
    1333 Lakeshore Road, Burlington ON L7S 1A9
     Room Assignment: Fireside Room.
The Agenda will include the following:
  • A hands-on viewing of a SAQA Trunk Show that includes 44 pieces, each 1 foot square in plastic sleeves for up close passing around and handling, made by artists from around the world.
  • A chance to share news about each others activities, show events and current works in progress. Feel free to bring any art you would like to “show and tell” and share.
  • A post Fibre Content show discussion/update and chance to explore ideas on what’s next, where we go from here....
  • A general discussion on what/when/where you would like future SAQA meetings to be held.
We would greatly appreciate RSVP emails to if you are going to attend.

NEWS from Pat Caffery re: Exhibition at The Art Gallery of Cornwall and our SAQA Central Canada SYNTHESIS II Upcoming Exhibition

Pat Caffery, Synthesis II Curator, has confirmed that SAQA Central Canada's Group Exhibition  Synthesis II, which is a SAQA santioned Gallery Exhibition, will be hung in the Gibson Gallery in Amherstburg, Ontario from October 23rd to November 16th, 2014. 
The exact dates for the two galleries in Almonte, Ontario for May and June, 2013 should be forthcoming in a week or so. Watch the blog for more details.

The SAQA Central Canada members list that is shown on the right side of this Blog has not been able to update for quite some time due to a Blogger Error (we all know about the illusive errors as bloggers).
Thanks to a response to my pleas by those wonderful computer masters and magic elves behind the scenes, the Update/SAVE button has been reinstalled and our list updates have been accomplished as of this date.

Congratulations to Heather Dubreuil and Michele Meredith

SAQA members Michele Meredith and Heather Dubreuil are pleased to be participating in the annual spring show of the Hudson Artists, along with about 35 other artists in a variety of media. The venue is the Stephen J. Shaar Community Centre, 394 Main Road, Hudson.

The show opens at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 19, with a vernissage. It continues on Saturday and Sunday, April 20 and 21, from 10 - 5. Refreshments are available, and a painting will be raffled off to benefit NOVA.
