Congratulations to ELAINE QUEHL as she assumes a new role as Fabric Line and Pattern Designer for NORTHCOTT FABRICS

We are here today with huge congratulations and to pass along the exciting news shared with her blog readers in November... Elaine's exciting summer of 2013 was spent working with the well known Canadian fabric manufacturer, NORTHCOTT FABRIC's Deborah Edwards, learning the "ropes" for becoming one of their contributing artist/designers. This new relationship has resulted in the upcoming launch of an entirely new line of nature inspired fabrics. We wish Elaine all of the very best and know that her commitment to the art of working with fibre and textile as a designer, quilter and dye master, and her continued sharing of techniques and inspiration with students around the world will be an inspiring and wonderful new part of her busy life.
LOSSES, Elaine Quehl
Inspiration for the new line is seen here in Elaine's beautiful quilt, LOSSES, and the colours, textures and beautifully coordinated values in the hand dyed fabrics she used in this quilt are certainly representative of Elaine's talent.

"For the most part Northcott will be producing lines of fabric based on my hand-dyed fabrics. In addition, however, there will be printed fabrics based on elements from my quilts. In the last few months we've gone through a couple of ideas, which involved me doing a fair bit of dyeing to try to produce a line that would work and reflect the correct season when the fabric will be released. The other challenge for me, seat of the pants dyer that I am, is that I want a second set of fabrics almost identical to the set I am handing over to Northcott for photographing, scanning, etc. That second set is what I will use to make things from this line of fabric." relates Elaine.
"The other part of the relationship with Northcott is that they will become the distributor for my patterns." Those of us who have worked with Elaine in her classes know she is a detail oriented and extremely talented designer, keen to make sure that the pattern "works" before releasing it to the public and her following of eager students. We eagerly anticipate new designs along the way.
So, Elaine... from all of your friends, long term customers and the many students who have benefitted from your skills and knowledge, your willingness to share all that you have learned as an artist to ensure that we have the techniques and confidence to follow along in your footsteps, the very best as your busy year ticks down. We will all be around to help as you celebrate the release of your new fabric line in early 2014. There will be the resulting tours, all new classes and the beautiful smiles you will undoubtedly be wearing everywhere you go! Job very well done and we wish you all of the best as launch time approaches.

Regional Meeting in Kingston, November 18th

Twelve members of Central Canada Region gathered at St. John's Church in Kingston on Monday, Nov. 18th for a short business meeting and a much longer sharing of Creative Buffet of new work and art acquisitions. The day may have been grey, but smiles all around the table.
Many of the members brought new pieces created in their studios including a terrific Totem by Susan Farber, a beautiful machine stitchery in 12 x 12 format from Diane Hogan, and some great hand painted fabric from Wendy Austen. We saw pieces purchased from well known members/area artists, Karen Goetzinger (who was in Kingston for a terrific FIBREWORKS KINGSTON weekend sharing Dynamic Colour for Fibre Artists) and Maggie Vanderweit Meredith. All of this reminds us that our SAQA Central members are working in studio and creating ART... and successfully sharing/selling it in the community which is so important. We also had the opportunity to add some threads and hand dyed sari silk yardage for embellishment to our stash thanks to friends.
Special thanks were passed to Susan Farber, Lee Fisher Goodchild and Nancy Gall for serving as our Meetings Committee this past year and organizing four great meetings. Each received a SAQA Exhibition catalogue for their enjoyment.
We welcome Robin Field, Diane Hogan and Peta Bailey as our new Planning Committee for 2014. Please contact them with special requests or suggestions for what YOU would like to see happening at area meetings in the new year.

Reminders were shared to start (if you have not already) your contribution piece for the 25th Anniversary of SAQA Travelling Trunk Shows to be launched at the SAQA Conference in Washington, DC.  Join SAQA in celebrating our 25th amazing year with your trunk show submission! This traveling exhibition asks SAQA members to create a 10" x 7" art quilt that showcases their artistic expression. The 2014 Anniversary Trunk Show will premier at the 2014 SAQA conference in Washington, DC, and then travel all across the United States and around the world. A group of quilts from this exhibition will be chosen by jurors Linda Colsh and Margaret “Peg” Keeney to become a permanent part of the collection of the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky.
The details are on the submission form and may be found here:

After lunch, members tried their hands at a little bit of experimenting with DYNA FLOW Paints and some Artists Inks from Daler Rowney. Here is a fast little landscape piece created by member, Joan Reive. Can't wait to see it finished with Joan's special stitches and ready for sharing.

Wishing each of you a terrific pre-Holiday season. Hope you have a chance to make your way to the John M. Parrott Gallery at the Belleville Public Library between now and November 28th to see the work of QUINTE FIBRE ARTISTS including more beautiful work by Joan Reive and Mary Andrews Minigan, SAQA Central Members. And, Sharon Collins, our retiring Central Canada Rep and friends have a stunning collection of fibre art works in SOULPLAY at the Window Art Gallery, Kingston School of Art thru December 1st.
Thanks everyone for a great meeting and a really good year.

Minutes Central SAQA parlour meeting, Ottawa, Oct. 20th.

Minutes Central SAQA parlour meeting, Ottawa, Oct. 20th.
1-A small but successful meeting was held at Wabi Sabi in Ottawa. Thank you to Marie-France for hosting and doing a demo for us on Richard Gill paints. It was interesting and useful information and was very well received.
2-Pat Caffery gave us an update on current and upcoming sites for Synthesis II, before the tour is completed next year. Again big thanks go out to Pat for her continued significant efforts on this venture.
3-Creative Buffet as usual was inspiring. Heather brought a delightful SAQA auction piece; (“MY Tern” by Martha ) that she had purchased.
We were able to see Mary Pal’s  “Equus” and cards of her “Upon Reflection”. We heard the wonderful story of her trip to the Crane foundation at Baraboo and the live auction of her donated piece.
Marie-France showed us some of her recent pieces that were of a similar genre to the piece accepted in Quilts=Art=Quilts.
Meredith Filshie showed a beautifully beaded piece of a tulip she had designed.
I showed two pieces with a new technique for me of silk organza overlay on painted fabric.

4-Discussion was held on “SAQA 2014 Anniversary Trunk Show” donations. We are encouraging everyone to participate.
Details are on the SAQA website.
·  Quilted pieces must have three layers, and measure 10" high x 7" wide (25.4 x 17.8 cm) in a PORTRAIT orientation. All embellishments must fit within the 10" x 7" size.
·  SAQA will mount artwork on a 12 x 9" black backing board.
·  Quilts must lie flat, and fit within a clear envelope, therefore dimensional work will not be·  allowed for this show.
·  Edges of quilts must be finished. The method is at the artist's discretion (bound, stitched,·  etc).
·  All quilts must have a label on the back, with the title (or "Untitled") and artist's name clearly written
·  Artwork must meet the SAQA definition of an art quilt: The art quilt is a creative visual work
·  that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure.
·  Quilts could travel for up to three years. They must stay with the Trunk during the entire exhibition period.
·  Participation fee is $10 to cover cost of materials and return shipping.  Pay the fee through the  SAQA Store.

At the meeting Meredith said quilts could be dropped at Canada Beading Co. and I could collect them and send them all together from here or perhaps in conjunction with Bethany Garner from Kingston, if this can be easily coordinated in January.

5-My term as SAQA regional co-rep is scheduled to be up in Jan. Bethany Garner and Dwayne Warner are continuing on in their roles as coreps. We are seeking someone from the Ottawa area to apply for this position.

6-An energetic discussion was held on what things we expect from our local parlour meetings such as:
frequency, topics for discussion, days of the week for meetings, technique oriented? Location suggestions, ….etc. I invite you to write me back directly with comments on these topics. A formal survey could be arranged, but I would like to try this approach first.

KIT VINCENT and MARIE-FRANCE GOSSELIN works at the renowned Quilts=ART=Quilts Exhibition in Auburn, NY

MEGANTIC, Kit Vincent
Last weekend, travelling to Auburn, NY and the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Centre made for a delightful adventure. The opportunity to attend the lovely QAQ Brunch at the Springside Inn and be present to listen to the Prize Juror, Lasse Antonsen, speak about his steps to choosing the award winning quilts was a rare opportunity.
The day also offered a chance to congratulate KIT VINCENT as she was honoured for her FIRST PLACE Award for MEGANTIC, a beautifully executed torn and layered composition quilt in gorgeous silk and hand dyed fabrics. Mr. Antonsen chose Megantic as his personal Jurors Award, and spoke at length about the quilt's strengths as a definitive art piece, and the skill Kit demonstrated as she used the cloth in place of brush strokes on her masterpiece.
Kit's second submission was also selected for the exhibition. Torn Sari , below, is a quilt that depicts strong movement and colour shifts that entice the viewer to come close and examine the fabric, the loose threads and the dimensional qualities that call to mind many emotions, memories of vistas viewed and simply delight the eye.

TORN SARI, Kit Vincent

It was also a joy to spend brunch time with MARIE-FRANCE and her husband, and have the opportunity to chat about the experience of being chosen for Quilts=ART=Quilts. Marie-France was one of the 70 artists chosen for this annual exhibition from 348 quilts and 190 quilters, and her quilt CHAOS simply shines in the Gallery.

Using her talent as a fabric painter and composition artist, the quilt resonates with a riot of colour, design elements and stitch. Many congratulations to Marie-France.
