Nov. 23, 2012 – Jan. 6, 2013
Opening Nov. 25
The Invitational exhibit, Tradition in Transition, curated by Sandra Reford (, shows traditional quilts and the development of the technique into contemporary works. The 35 pieces were selected from across Canada, originally for an exhibit in France earlier this year.
Reford shares: 'Textile art in Canada is not only inspired by our environment, be it natural or man-made, it often incorporates that very thing. Quilts are made of fabric hand-dyed with collected berries or bark. In the city, fabric is dyed with rusted metal. The light, textures and colours from our changing seasons also play a role in our expression. The forms of the textile works reflect the symmetry of the skyscrapers or the raw shapes of the outdoors. The materials used are themselves important and are often sentimental conversations with the past in the re-use of fabrics. As artists, we are influenced by our cultural backgrounds, consciously or sub-consciously. That heritage can be seen in our works".
Several SAQA Central Canada members are included in the exhibition, as well as the beautiful LAURENTIAN FOOTHILLS collaborative piece by 20 participating SAQA Central members.
For more information/ for a pdf copy of the invitation, please contact the Curator, Sandra Reford at the web address above .

SAQA Central Canada has had many new members join us in the past six months and Regional Meetings are the very best way to have all members get together from time to time and enjoy meeting and getting to know each other in a casual, but meeting focused environment. While we know everyone's schedule is full at this time of year, I hope your will mark your calendar now and plan to join us on the 26th. There is definitely beautiful new textile work underway, we need these opportunities to get together and  share our new work, event news and encourage the members of SAQA to work together to ensure that our communities and the greater textile world is aware of what is happening in our Region. We would love to have each of you bring news to share as well as some new work.

I would be pleased to entertain your suggested Agenda items for the meeting, and you may send those to me at either or by no later than November 20th with thanks . The Agenda will be sent via email to those who confirm their intended Regional Meeting attendance to either of the addresses above.

Hoping that those of you who have not entered a SAQA exhibition are looking closely at all of the opportunities for your work to be shared all across the US and Internationally through SAQA sponsored exhibits in various venues. The events postings are sent to all members by our Executive Director, Martha Sielman in her monthly Newsletter and via SAQA e-News at least once a month. All of this information is posted for you at our main SAQA website

Please plan to join us and help me welcome our newest Central Canada members, share some of your new work at our CREATIVE BUFFET, and learn more about all of the wonderful opportunities that SAQA has to offer to local area, Canadian, US and international members.

Refreshments will be served with treats donations welcome.
