CONNECTIONS Fibre Artists present their spring 2014 Exhibition at Wellington County Museum and Archives, Fergus/Elora, ON

‘Celebrate The Seven’
by

Connections Fibre Artists
April 5-June 9, 2014

OPENING RECEPTION, Friday, April 4, 2014
7-9 pm
The art of The Group Of Seven is the central theme of this exhibition.

The members of Connections Fibre Artists accepted the challenge to design and execute their own original art that reflects their individual research into the artists, the paintings and the styles of the Group of Seven.

Although Tom Thompson died before the group formed, he was the inspiration for, and has always been considered a part of, the formation of The Group Of Seven.

Each member of Connections Fibre Artists has approached this theme from her or his own way ~ either inspired by their own memories of the Canadian landscape, by an emotional response to a particular Group of Seven artist/painting, or by some of the techniques and colour palettes used by these iconic Canadian artists.

The result is an exciting and intriguing exhibition celebrating the approach that Tom Thompson, Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, J.E.H. MacDonald, F.A. Farley, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer and Franklin Carmichael took to develop an original Canadian art.

The group was formed in 1999 by a small group of friends whose common bond was the love of stitching as an art form. Their focus was to promote awareness and enjoyment of fibre art through gallery shows.

Their mandate was ‘Experience, Experimentation, Expression’.

We combine our Experience with Experimentation to continue to develop and widen the boundaries of fibre art, creating original surfaces and Expressing our individual ideas and feelings in the process.

TextileArtist.org is a place to be inspired, learn from the best, promote your work and reach other creatively-minded people. I am thrilled to be profiled on the British-based website TextileArtist.org. This blog is managed by two brothers, Sam and Joseph Pitcher, and it has a serious international following. It features not only in-depth profiles of artists working in the full spectrum of fibre, but also includes helpful articles on topics such as hanging and photographing textile work and choosing templates for your website.

STRUCTURES

Each month during the year, a member of SAQA is selected to choose a gallery of work related to a special theme of her choice, and to be displayed at the main www.SAQA.com website.

Please make time to visit the website here for a view of the Gallery:

Curator's Statement:

I am captivated by the many ways that quilters use soft components to create the illusion of hard structures. So many design decisions are made; so many artistic devices are employed. Should I use a lot of color or should I limit my palette? Should I show a complete composition or leave something for the viewer to fill in? Should I use a familiar viewpoint or would an unexpected angle better communicate my message? I chose these structures because they spoke to me. I hope they speak to you as well.

Congratulations to Heather Dubreuil, Phillida Hargreaves and Catherine Timm, our Central Canada Artists for inclusion in the STRUCTURES Gallery.

Welcome to Central Canada member KIT LANG, and special thanks for particpating in The 2014 SAQA Trunk Show Call to Entry...

WINTER BIRCHES, Kit Lang

As a child in Northern Ontario, it seemed the winters were a sea of white. Deep snow, ice, our white stucco house surrounded by birches - even the evergreens were covered by snow. The only colour to be found was in the creatures who lived in the woods: like this hare poised to leap away.

So many thanks to Kit for sending her contribution of this beautiful piece of fibre art for the SAQA 25th Anniversary Trunk Show Exhibition in Washington, D.C. in May. Kit's work is another beautiful example of the Central Canada talent that will be represented at the SAQA Conference and as the SAQA 2014 Trunk Shows are assembled and ready for sharing with the world.
