We continue to share - SAQA Silver Anniversary TRUNK SHOW pieces from Central Canada Artists Gunnel Hag and Heather Dubreuil

Georgian Bay Summer, Gunnel Hag

As you know I love designing surface patterns on fabric. I equally love the Canadian outdoors and all the patterns that appear in nature. While camping and canoeing in Georgian Bay I took rubbings from the rocks, and made a silk screen for printing the background fabric, which I then over painted. I took the picture of the sky while lying on the beautiful warm rocks of Beausoleil Island in Georgian Bay.

Ah, there's nothing like summer skies with friendly cumulus clouds.......

Water Tower #4, Heather Dubreuil

The image for my piece was taken from a photo which I took while walking the High Line linear park in New York. I used the lines and shapes but changed the colours to give a feeling of sunrise coming up over the East River. Fun to work in these vibrant, warm colours.

Thank you to both SAQA artist members for sharing their beautiful work. There will be strong representation from our region for this important traveling SAQA Trunk Show over the next three years. The pieces are all 7" x 10", and the detail is amazing in all of the art work we have seen thus far. Thank you for sharing this amazing work..
The first sharing will be at the CELEBRATING SILVER Conference in Washington, D.C in May 2014. The Trunks will then be packed for travel and designated for sharing with regions around the world. If you have sent a piece and would like to share, please send a high resolution  jpeg and the story to Bethany Garner garner@kingston.net

A number of  pieces from those submitted by SAQA members from around the world will be chosen by a panel of Jurors to become part of the Permanent Collection at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky.

. If there are more pieces that have been sent from our Central Canada Region, do share them and we will post for all to see and enjoy. Many thanks to both Tracey and Lynne.

CALL TO ENTRY - an invitation to participate in an exceptional Art Exhibition in fall 2014

The first FIBRE CONTENT Exhibition, held October 27-28, 2012 at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre, was a powerful opportunity to show the world the high quality of our fibre artists. The response from the artists was enthusiastic and the quality of exhibited work exceeded all expectations.

The 2014 Exhibition Organizing Committee is, therefore, happy to announce the second bi-annual Fibre Content Exhibition, to be held at the

Burlington Art Centre, September 9-16, 2014!

Juried by Emma Quin, Executive Director of the Ontario Crafts Council, Virginia Eichhorn, Director and Chief Curator of the Tom Thomson Art Gallery, and Sandra Dupret, Dean/Principal of the Fleming College Haliburton Campus, the 2014 show will seek to exhibit the best of contemporary Canadian fibre art — a wide range of works in fibre and mixed media such as fabric, paper, yarn, thread and various mixed materials.

In organizing Fibre Content 2014, Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) Central Canada Division is joined by a wider number of guilds: Burlington Fibre Arts Guild, Burlington Handweavers and Spinners Guild, Burlington Hooking Craft Guild, Connections Fibre Artists, Grand Guild of Fibre Artists, Group of Eight Fibre Artists and Oakville Fibre Arts Guild.

The entries are open to all members of SAQA Central Canada and the participating guilds, as well as non-members who, if accepted, will be willing to join SAQA.

We welcome you to visit the SAQA website at http://www.SAQA.com for membership information.

Original artwork must have been completed within the last five years and must be the result of independent effort. Works, framed or unframed, must be ready to be hung. Before entering you artwork, please read rules and requirements in our online entry form (coming soon) carefully.

View/download our official Call for Entry (PDF) here.
