FIBREWORKS KINGSTON welcomes area Fibre Artists to enjoy workshop weekends in 2013/14

At the Marina, Pamela Allen

ABOUT TOWN with Pamela Allen
October 18-20th

Creating an art quilt is a process that is personal and requires the imagination, creativity and focus that our SAQA members bring into their work every day. One master of the art form is our own renowned Kingston fibre artist, PAMELA ALLEN. This fall, FIBREWORKS KINGSTON welcomes Pam as she shares a full weekend of fibre play with students who will have the opportunity to see, share and devour the boundless energy and huge inventory of design, stitch and colour mastery that Pamela brings into each of her pieces.

Being able to spend two focused fall days designing and stitching a story about your own town, a familiar landscape or an area visited and worthy of recording in cloth - a memory that will be recorded for time or just a magical and fun filled adventure with your creative muse is the promise for our weekend students. Students will enjoy Pam's quick-fire exercises to start the process, and  sketching, free form cutting, layering and stitching a small masterpiece of their own or a larger piece that will  carry the message of a special place in their lives to be shared with others.

Detail: My Town on the River, Pamela Allen

Please visit the FIBREWORKS KINGSTON blog at www.fibreworkskingston.blogspot.ca/ for more information about the workshop with Pam.

Also at the site, all of the details of the spring workshops with CAROL SODERLUND, Geneva, NY, "Transformations": a three-day dye and stitch workshop weekend with a renowned dye Master,  March 21-23, 2014. Also see details in the right sidebar for PENNY BERENS, Granville Ferry, NS who will share "Make it Your Own  with Discharge" May 20-21, 2014 in Kingston.

A pdf brochure for FIBREWORKS KINGSTON is available from Bethany Garner, FW Coordinator by emailing:  fibreworkskingston@gmail.com

Hope to see YOU  at a FIBREWORKS weekend during this exciting Series of Weekend Workshops.

Are you following the 2013 SAQA Benefit Auction online??? Join in!

Round Two of the bidding opened today for the SAQA 2013 Benefit Auction which is the major annual fundraiser for our Association, and supports the many NEW Exhibitions planned by SAQA over the next year.

Quilts sold in Round One included great quilts by Central Canada members PHILLIDA HARGREAVES, "Dancing" and HELENA SCHEFFER "Revelry".  Thanks so much for sharing your work with appreciative collectors of fine quilt art. You can see their quilts at:

The first quilt sold today was donated by JAN MYERS NEWBURY, my dye idol, and it went in the first hours of bidding for $750. Thanks to Jan and her amazing Arashi Pole Wrapped Shibori,  Round Two is on it's way....

Pages 2a and 2b are open for viewing and the bidding is underway!!! In this round,  two of our SAQA Central Canada members, SHARON COLLINS, SAQA Central Co-Rep and ROBIN LAWS FIELD have work in the group of quilts up for bids.

Why not stay on top of the Benefit Auction in the weeks to come. It's fun to watch each evening and see which quilts have been purchased that day and what is yet to come as the quilts go to the active bidders. I bought two great small quilts Saturday in the closing hours of Round One, and cannot wait to see them arrive in the mail and add them to my collection. I have purchased the art of my fellow SAQA members for the past six years and love each piece. The quilts happily adorn the walls of my studio. I have acquired beautiful art quilts from the several US art quilters, Linda Colsh from Belgium , Catharina Breedyk Law and Karen Goetzinger from our own Central Canada membership and a great quilt from Luxembourg through the SAQA Auctions.

Are we there yet? Robin Laws Field

Submitting a bid is fun, fast and so easy with the online bid form and your credit card. Being counted as a contributing member, either by donating YOUR quilts or as a collecting bidder during the Benefit Auction weeks, is all important for the continuing growth and support of our SAQA Exhibitions and is hugely important to our Mission -  sharing quilt art with the world.

Oil and Water, Sharon Collins
Have some fun with your viewing and BIDDING this week, and do share the news with friends, family and neighbors who love ART: (and THANK YOU!)

Carol Howard Donati in Building Peace Exhibition at the Diefenbunker

The postcard with information for the building peace exhibition which includes work by SAQA member Carol Howard Donati.

Many thanks to Nancy Gall and Susan Farber for a great SAQA Central Canada Summer Gathering

Acrylic painted papers, with Kit Vincent

A beautiful summer day starting with cooler temperatures and some lovely Rideau views greeted twelve members of SAQA Central Canada gathering at the canal side Log Cabin summer home of Nancy Gall just west of Elgin. A great sharing of show and tell brought by members and discussion of techniques started the morning.

Susan Farber with a view of the busy lawn/home

We welcomed member Joan Hug-Valeriote who had driven 5 hours from GUELPH on the morning of the meeting to be with us. Her work is wonderful, and the story and sharing of this amazing "Jeans" quilt made and enlarged several times for her son as he grew up and now married. Joan currently has an Exhibition of her beautiful fibre art in the St. Jacobs Quilt Gallery "Reduce, Reuse Recycle and Repurpose" at 1441 King St. North through October 2013. Visit her website at www.horizonsquilting.ca for details.

Joan Hug-Valeriote with jeans quilt
Lunch was Potluck and more than delicious, which added to the fun. Lots of great summertime treats and too much sugar created a lot of excitement as the members headed out onto the expansive lawns with their tables, acrylic paints and tissue paper to try a great process for creating coloured backgrounds for stitch and multi media play.

Huge thanks to Susan Farber, Lee Goodchild and especially our hostess, Nancy Gall, all members of our Meetings Coordination Committee, for making 2012/13 a great year of Central Canada meetings. Looking forward to the next.

Please stay tuned for notification and plan to join us.
