Building Blocks: Line and Shape

Have you ever been tempted to create a gallery of local heritage
buildings, or to preserve the memory of your family home?

This is your opportunity. Collecting your own original photos of buildings will sharpen your eye and encourage you to reduce your subject to its essentials. Other suitable subjects include furniture groupings, a still life, or interesting objects like a bicycle or spinning wheel: anything with a strong linear quality. Beginning on a small practice piece with a photo provided, participants will create a line drawing to translate into cloth and stitch, using their sewing machines as a drawing tool.
 
 
Having mastered the basic technique, students will move on to a photo of their own choosing. Time should allow for a second project to be started, which will introduce shape as well as line. In this more involved technique, cloth shapes are fused to a background and over-laid with a line drawing. Instructions on finishing the pieces and mounting them on a stretched canvas will be reviewed.
 


Heather Dubreuil graduated from Concordia University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours, Art Education), and from McGill University with diplomas in Education (1978) and Instructional Technology (1987). She taught elementary school for twenty years and has taught a variety of stitch related classes to hundreds of adults. Heather is active in her local art scene, managing a small artists’ showcase and participating in regional studio tours, art shows and art fairs. She belongs to Text’art, a group of seven innovative fibre artists, and the international blogging group 12bythedozen, as well as SAQA. Her work has been shown in both solo and group exhibitions, many of them juried, and her pieces are in collections in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. Heather’s current work deals with architectural themes, with shape and line expressed in cloth and stitch.
