Sandra Reford shares opportunity for Juried Show Exhibition in Italy in 2013

Dear Textile Artists and Quilters,

Many of you know that I have been working with the Veronese for about 7 years now in both the teaching side and the exhibiting side. Verona hosts a textile festival every two years and this coming April they will again exhibit international works and a JURIED SHOW ....which is why I am communicating with you now.

Please view the guidelines at the following address:

http://www.veronatessile.it/en_EN/concorso/concorso.html

Of course you can tell your friends not only the Canadian ones! It is an international event. I wanted to participate this year (did last time and my work was selected) but I accepted an invitation to be on the jury along with several other international artists and quilters. I think we are 5 jurors.

Consider participating! It could be an amazing opportunity to have your work exhibited in Italy at a prestigious and well attended event. There are GREAT prizes as well!

NEERA HUCKVALE new work juried into ART QUILTS YEAR XVII at Chandler Center for the Arts

ART QUILTS YEAR XVII: Integrating A Paradox
An exhibition of Textile Arts juried by Adriene Buffington
November 2, 2012 – January 20, 2013

Chandler Cultural Foundation Chandler Center for the Arts
250 North Arizona Avenue Chandler AZ 85225

Meet the Artists Reception
Friday, November 2nd, 7–9 PM

This exhibition is comprised of well over 60 hand quilted, printed, hand embellished and picturesque representations in fabric. All artworks are accompanied by a story and artist biography.

The artworks were selected based on our juror’s theme, ‘Integrating a Paradox’. The theme encouraged textile artists to explore duality. A paradox can express the tension between ideas that are contradictory, and yet both are true. Integrating a Paradox is not blending these opposites into some neutral compromise, but joining them in a way so that each element retains its unique character - yet somehow working better together than apart.

The exhibition is curated by Arizona textile artist Adriene Buffington, who writes, “My life has been an experience of contrasts. It begins with growing up in both Studio City, California, and Missoula, Montana; with one parent a hippie professor and the other a probation officer. I started my adult life pursuing a management career in retail fashion, but married young and chose to stay home with our three kids. I gradually completed a degree in Art but then earned a Masters of Arts in Theology. I thought I would teach geometry, but I wrote a book on dyeing fabric.

Textile art is not always synonymous with traditional quilting, although the traditional forms and stitching are ever present, the compositions tend to reach toward the dramatic. ART QUILTS tend to be vibrant representations of ideals and stories that stir the imagination and impress the viewer. The elements of storytelling and composition blend into fantastic canvases in fabric.

Congratulations Neera!

Neera Huckvale is presently Artist-in-Residence at The School of Dance in Ottawa. Born in India, she moved to Canada with her family at the age of 10. She studied at the Ottawa School of Art in the 1980s adding fabric later to her list of mediums which has become her focus over the last 12 years. Recently she has completed studies in paper making.

As a member of the group “Out-Of-The-Box-Fibre-Artists” she has shown with them in Ottawa as well as at the Montreal Centre of Contemporary Textiles (2007). She participated in an exhibit with MainWorks artists (1999) and had a solo show of charcoal drawings at the University of Ottawa (1993). As one of three artists-in-residence, she has also exhibited yearly at The School of Dance since 2007.

KIT VINCENT to share Weekend Workshop at St. Lawrence College October 12-14th... Come join us!

FIBREWORKS KINGSTON WEEKEND WORKSHOPS SERIES welcomes KIT VINCENT on Friday evening, October 12, 2012 to Room 12050 in the Adminsitrative Wing, St. Lawrence College for her evening Artists Lecture as a part of the 2012-2013 Workshops Season... everyone welcome! Just two seats available in this exciting, creative workshop - do join us! This is one Workshop Weekend you do not want to miss....

Unleash Your Inner Matisse With Paper and Fabric Cutouts

Are you instinctually drawn to Matisse’s wonderful cutouts?

In this workshop you will be inspired to channel your inner Matisse and experiment creating cutouts using mixed media collage including painted papers and fabrics.

Kit will demonstrate a process for making a unique stiffened ‘fabric-paper’ using a sandwich made with a commercial polyester substrate and coloured tissue paper. This fabric-paper can be added to your mixed media collection and incorporated into your compositions in a variety of innovative ways.

You will practice simplifying your favorite images down to their essence, abstracting them as much as possible.I will guide you through several collage techniques in which you will combine and layer colorful papers and fabrics into a large overall composition or alternatively, into several smaller studies. Stitch work will follow as time allows.

FIBREWORKS KINGSTON Weekend Workshop Fee: $125 and Materials Fee: $20

Kit Vincent has studied textile arts at the Crow Timber-Frame Barn in Baltimore Ohio, and has completed a two-year Art Cloth Mastery Program with Jane Dunnewold in San Antonio, Texas. Kit constructs fibre art using fabrics that she has dyed and patterned with a variety of surface design processes. These surfaces are heavily thread-painted with machine stitching and/or hand embroidery. Her work has appeared in numerous shows in Canada, the United States and overseas, including Quilt National, in Athens, Ohio; Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, Ohio; Museum for Contemporary Textiles, Montreal, Quebec; Patchwork & Quilt Expo, Lyon and Le Carrefour Du Patchwork, Val d`Argent, Alsace, France. Kit is also a sought-after teacher who enjoys exploring as many fibre related techniques and materials as she can and sharing these with her students.

SYNTHESIS II - A Message from Curator, Patricia Caffery

SYNTHESIS II to have new opportunities for 2013 and 2014.

I am thrilled to let you know that Lynne Morin has been hard at work on behalf of Synthesis II. She has applied again to the City of Ottawa for an opportunity to have Synthesis II in one of the City Galleries in 2013. Last year we were on a waiting list so hopefully with Lynne's hard work we will be successful at obtaining Gallery space in Ottawa.

Lynne also made a submission to the Chambers Gallery and the Corridor Gallery in Almonte. Today they confirmed that they will host Synthesis II in May 2013 at the Chambers Gallery and in June 2013 at the Corridor Gallery at the Library. A huge thank you to Lynne for all her work on behalf of Synthesis II.

Lynne is also working with the Homer Watson Gallery in Kitchener and perhaps we will be successful there.

I am still negotiating dates with the Gibson Gallery. They have an opening next summer but we are trying to co-ordinate the Gibson Exhibition with two other galleries in the area. If we are successful, I expect all of the exhibitions will be in early 2014. As soon as I have dates, I will let you know.

Heather Dubreuil is working with SAQA members in Quebec at obtaining gallery space for Synthesis II. All of the materials are being translated into French by Julie Poirier. This is a huge undertaking but essential for any submissions in Quebec. Thank you Julie, your huge contribution is very much appreciated.

A Calendar of all of the upcoming SYNTHESIS II traveling Exhibition Locations will be posted to the Synthesis II pages here at the SAQA Central Blog as soon as the actual dates are confirmed.

Anyone who has a connection to the local Gallerys in their location is encouraged to please join us in the effort to secure future Exhibition venues for this beautiful and thought provoking exhibition collection. (Twenty pieces from 16 Canadian Artists, all exhibition ready. The collection comes with a beautiful exhibition Artists Statement portfolio to have at the Gallery for viewer information). Please contact Pat Caffery, Synthesis II Curator, at prc.fibremaven@gmail.com for information about the exhibition pieces, shipping and for an informational package including a DVD of the pieces to share with your contacts.
